PREPOSITIONS NAD AND POD
1 min read · 207 words
Like their Russian counterparts, the LPQR prepositions nad ("above") and pod ("below") indicate that one object is located above or below another stationary object.
When motion is involved, however, LPQR uses the compound prepositions po-nad ("over, above") and po-pod("under, beneath").
Examples:
A helicopter was flying over the city.
Helikopter letjel po-nad gorod.
To sail under a bridge.
Proplǐtj po-pod most.
The prepositions nad and pod may also be used metaphorically to express hierarchical relationships between people, including relations of authority and subordination or supervision.
Examples:
Under the director's supervision.
Pod rukovodstvo ot direktor.
Power over people.
Vlastj nad ljudi.
In Russian, the preposition nad is also used to indicate the object toward which an activity or emotional attitude is directed. LPQR does not employ nad in such constructions. Instead, the prepositions na or s are used, depending on the semantics of the verb.
Examples:
To work on a book.
Rabotatj s kniga.
To make fun of one's son.
Šutitj na sǐn.
To work on a problem.
Rabotatj na zadača.
Russian also uses the preposition pod colloquially with the meaning "near" or "approximately". Such usage is not recommended in LPQR.
Examples:
Near Moscow.
Okolo Moskva.
A man of about forty years of age.
Mužčina okolo sorok godǐ.
