There are two morphological tenses in Zomlish: past and non-past. The non-past tense is completely unmarked, whereas the past tense is marked with vowel ablaut. The final vowel of a verb is either raised or elongated (occurs when the final vowel is already a closed vowel).
Original vowel(s) | New Vowel | Example |
|---|---|---|
i | iː | vimi (fly) -> vimii (flew) |
u | uː | galu (learn) -> galuu (learned) |
e, ø | i | gre (dig) -> gri (dug) |
ɤ, o | u | kiko (have) -> kiku (had) |
a | e | sigra (think) -> sigre (thought) |
Most other temporal information (such as discussing the future) is conveyed by temporal adverbs.
